You may have heard already, but just in case you haven't, SLW Student Ministries is excited to announce our Winter 2011 Retreat!

Sign-up now to reserve your spot! A deposit of $10 reserves your spot, or just pay the whole $20 right now and get it over with!

We'll leave around 6pm on Friday, January 21st & return around 11am on Sunday, January 23rd.

We've already reserved an amazing cozy Lodge (pictured above) with a ton of room and lots of land.

During our time we'll have a ton of fun, eat great food, hang out with our favorite sponsors and friends, and talk about Identity - who we are, who we're not, and who we are meant to be. A guest speaker will join us to teach and tell a little of his story.

For all events we engage in that happen off-site (not @SLW), this form is essential.

It covers liability and safety, and is designed to protect all parties involved.

Keep in mind, if you have filled this form out for another activity, it is not necessary to fill out the contact or emergency information (unless it needs updating).

However, parents/guardians (or 18+ students) will need to sign the lower portion of the form for each event.

It's happening!

This Sunday (Oct 3) is our first BIG 1 of Fall '10! We already have live worship lined up for the night, as well as some really fun activities, and teaching. We'll continue with our "Old People" teaching series. Please don't be offended if you or someone you know is elderly...we're just studying people of the Old Testament, and that takes a long time to say...it's just an unfortunate abbreviation (or funny one depending on who you are). We discussed Joshua last week - here's some of what we learned.

In addition to worship, teaching (Abigail's our "Old Person" this week), and some awesome games, this BIG 1 will be great because you and your friends bring a sense of excitement with you as you walk in the doors. (We are also excited to announce the addition of 2 new Sponsors - say Hello to Betsy and Cady when you see them!)

Get October 17th on your calender. That's when we'll be going to the Coolspring Cornmaze! I know some of you have already been, but that's okay, it's just more fun when we go as a group! Check this post out for more information.

The Backyard Bash was great! We played great games, ate great food (mountain pies, giant marshmallows), and had a blast around the fire. Check out some pics from the event at our facebook group. *Friday, September 17 - Come support Mason and Marcus DePeal (G.C.) vs. Nick Billingsley (Franklin) as they battle it out on the football field. @ Grove City at 7pm. Meet there, or message me about a ride. (I can't wait to confuse people when we cheer for both teams, haha!

*Saturday, September 18 - Come support Kylee Thompson on the tennis court against Greenville. Match starts at 10am in G.C. (at Grove City College courts on campus). Same plan for getting there.

*Sunday, September 19 - Student Body PM @ SLW from 6-8pm.

Make sure you talk to your parents about any of these you're interested in, and do it asap so you can make it! Be sure to invite some friends too! See you there

Still Summer!

Am I alone in this or does it seem like Summer '10 is flying by way too fast? We have already said hello and goodbye to a ton of good weather and some awesome times together (Slip 'N Slide, Cedar Point, ALIVE @ the Lake, Summer Xtreme, Whitewater Rafting, and more!). And as much as I'm excited about some stuff coming up, such as Fall Kickoff, The Great Stoneboro Fair!, and fall in general, I am NOT ready for Summer to be over. So, let's look at some things coming down the pike in the Summer we have left. First of all, mark your calendars for August the 18th. We will be attending the Pirates Game that night @ 7:05. We're planning on leaving at 4pm so we have time to tailgate before the game. (tailgating? are you kidding me?! I can't wait.)

Aside from the Pirates Game, we are also starting something that I am pumped about. I asked recently for you to tell me your favorite movie and song. We are going to begin looking at these pieces of art (sometimes...lol) and discussing them. I can't wait to hear your opinions and thoughts, and to learn from you and the artists we take a look at. Please bring some friends and your thinking caps.

Because our large events are so fun, we love to pack a lot of them into our summer schedule. One thing that I personally love, though, is when we have a lull in between large events. This time allows us to slow down a little bit and hang out with each other in a low-key way. Don't get me wrong, I love our events, and they let us hang out with new people, go to new places, and do things we may not otherwise do. But, there is something really cool about getting to kick back over some snacks with close friends. It's times like this that I remember really fondly. That being said...you really don't want to miss our Wednesday nights for the next few weeks. We will get together from 6:30-8pm. Let me know if you haven't already told me about your favorite song/movie.

Cedar Point/Soak City Trip!

We are going to Cedar Point on the 21st of July! You will be able to choose between Cedar Point and Soak City (obviously priced differently) $30 for Cedar Point, $18 for Soak City. You Choose! We will leave SLW at 8 a.m. and be back no later than midnight. E-mail Matt to sign up now!

Rafting!

Some last minute thoughts from our rafting company.

Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, bring eyeglass retainer straps, bring water bottle. Lunch is included. Cameras and electronics are at great risk without good waterproof protection.
Life jackets must be worn at all times while on the river, helmets and wetsuits available.

Please know that our group is requiring that helmets are worn. In talking with our company, it is recommended that (girls wear a swimsuit with shorts and/or shirt) and (guys wear swim trunks with shirt) and both wear shoes that either strap or tie. Dinner will be provided on the way back home. I seriously cannot wait for this!

Whitewater Rafting!

We have enough people to go, and many have already turned in waivers and money...but we don't want those who haven't signed up to miss this opportunity. Summer Xtreme!

Every year SLW holds a summer program for the children of our area. This year we are calling this week-long party Summer Xtreme - 2010 - Chase the Light. Every year we see kids come and have a blast, and many of them make lasting decisions for Christ during these weeks. (Actually, there is a good chance you have been to one of these week-long experiences). I know that in my own life, these types of experiences were crucial to me spiritually and socially...not to mention a blast! If you haven't already signed up to help with this week, you definitely don't want to miss out. This year we are starting the week (June 21-25) with a carnival-type party to kick things off!

At the end of the week, I will take the incoming 7th graders and get a chance to hang out with them and introduce them to what the next year for them will hold. This is their promotion process into Student Body! They are so stoked, because they get to join you in SLW Student Ministries! What an awesome time for them, and for Student Body, as we receive new friends into our community. The first event they will get to participate in as a member of our group is Whitewater Rafting (June 30th). What an awesome way to kick things off, huh? Be sure to look out for our newest members and introduce yourself to them and welcome them to our group.

Thank God for the opportunity to hang out with such awesome students and children in our area. Please be in prayer for the week of Summer Xtreme, that God would move in the hearts of our area's young people. Im pumped!

This month is a big one! We have 3 major opportunities this month that you need to be aware of!

1. We begin our Summer Schedule this Wednesday (June 9th). We are meeting from 6:30-8 p.m. at the church. Make sure you note the time-change.

2. Summer Xtreme (this year's summer children's program) is happening June 21-25 (6-8 p.m.) This is an awesome opportunity to JOIN and serve the children of our area. Many younger kids look up to you, and many children make their decisions for Christ at events just like this! Don't miss your chance to make a huge impact on your area this summer! 3. Our BIG Summer Events Schedule kicks off with Whitewater Rafting @ Ohiopyle! At a discounted price of $45 (usually around $55) our group is in for an awesome day of adventure. We will leave SLW @ 9 a.m. and be back around 8 p.m. Food will be included. Be sure to have a signed waiver and your $ to Matt by Sunday, June 13th to reserve your spot.

If you are not excited about this summer...then you probably don't get excited by things that are awesome. Yeah. Dates are still being nailed down, but so far we are: Going to Cedar Point, White-water rafting, and heading to a Pirates game!

Plus we all know that a slip'n slide, cookouts, lazer-tag, and more need to happen as well.

Hunger4Haiti

Everyone has seen the images, stories, and news surrounding Haiti. Many have chosen to respond. We are doing just that! Hunger4Haiti is your chance to take action in the face of disaster. Many of SLW's students have already begun contacting friends and family in order to raise awareness and prayer and financial support for those most affected by the January 12th earthquake. If you would like to be involved in Joining the Mission in this way, and have not signed up, simply e-mail Pastor Matt at mirvine@slwchurch.org. Once you have signed up, you will receive a fund-raising packet. Use this to collect funds, then join other students in the Hunger4Haiti process. This includes a 24 hour fast, beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, April 30th and ending at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 1st. At 6:30 p.m. on Friday the 30th, we will meet as a group to fast together, pray, play games, build care packages (to be sent to Haiti), build and sleep in a tent city, and more. Don't miss this opportunity to impact your world! All it takes is a small amount of sacrifice to make a huge difference. Remember...$30/day can feed a child...$40/day can provide food, medical, hygiene, and school supplies.

Fall is around the corner, and it holds some great stuff in store for us at SLW. Fall Launch is only a few weeks away (Sept. 13) which means a 3rd service on Sunday AM, new topics for Student Body AM, and some really cool stuff for children. As Student Ministries winds down a great summer of cool events and getting some rest, we are gearing up for quite an intense kickoff as well. We are beginning our new format (described fully in the Fall edition of the Pulse). Just be aware that this fall, it will be a great time to be a student at SLW!

Only we’re not canoeing across the country. And we will not be wearing fur (well maybe). And we won’t have Native American guides. And we aren’t going to be map-making. We probably won’t have to kill and eat wild animals for sustenance. Basically it is nothing like that, but it will go down in history. And we will have a journey.

April 24 and 25 (Friday/Saturday) we will be participating in the 30 Hour Famine. I know, it is over a month away, but it is important to start thinking about this. We will begin handing out resources and start fund-raising next sunday, March 22, 2009. If you have never been a part of the 30 Hour Famine, you will be blown away this year. If you have any questions, please ask Anna, Matt, other sponsors, students who have done this before, etc.

What's in a name?

The other day I decided to enlighten people as to why my name is what it is. A few people had asked where it came from, and I have always thought my story was pretty funny. So, then I started thinking about how many other unique stories are out there. And, since a lot of what we in Student Body are learning about has to do with identity, I thought I would throw this challenge out there.

ICE SKATING!

ICE SKATING! We are gonna do like speed-skaters next sunday (February 15). We will be meeting for lunch right after service on Sunday. We will leave after lunch and head out for some skating. We will return at 4:30pm. Cost is $6 and includes the cost of skate rental.
